What is swfobject?
Geoff writes/maintains an open source script called ’swfobject’ - it is used to place macromedia flash/swf files on web pages. It is so good that adobe/macromedia stopped using the stuff they ship with flash and use it themselves — as does microsoft, youtube, and tons of other high profile sites.
Why this site?
swfobject has a bad history with names. originally it was called flashobject, but adobe very nicely told geoff to not use flash in the name or they’ll use his ass. so geoff used swfobject ( i wanted him to call it swfilis, so we could make tshirts that read ’spreading swfilis’) and renamed it on his blog, which is where he publishes and distributes his script.
last week geoff found out that someone bought swfobject.com - it’s all in chinese and we joked that its his fansite. then i made him a fansite. he wasn’t too happy. then we had this ‘actual im conversation’
jonathan: you should buy swfobject.org
geoff: what for?
jonathan: to redirect to your site. acutally, i’ll do that for you. i have some dreamhost credits. i dont want to google for the latest version and find some crap.
geoff: i doubt that would happen. my page rank is too high
i immediately bought swfobject.org, and redirected it to his site. but something troubled me - geoff had a doubt that his pagerank could ever be hurt. i needed to prove him wrong.
the goal
the goal of swfobject.org is to overtake geoff’s blog and the ’swfobject’ script in google and yahoo page rankings.
the prize
once swfobject.org overtakes geoff’s blog for 1month straight (page rankings change), geoff will be awarded the domain.
the plan
in a plot that closely resembles teen wolf two with geoff playing the wolf as played by jason batemen and myself playing stiles– i plan on pimping geoff out in a dj battle.
holding true to internet celebrity, i challenge SuperGreg to fight Geoff Stearns in a superstar dj battle.

good question! we were friends before this website launched. i’m not quite sure what geoff’s response to all this will be… he’ll probably either take it well, or be really pissed.

this is a viral campaign for ‘Geoff Stearns #1′. swfobject.org is not associated with any companies in any way related to other internet icons. swfobject.org has nothing to do with supergreg, the company that handled that campaign, or the companies that he endorsed. The short list of Geoff Stearns vs. ___ was: fight the kid with the star wars sword ( he’d win and thats too nerdy ), dance off against the guy in the dancing thing, or do something against Chris Christmas Rodriguez. Since super greg is a dj that can’t dj, and I can’t recall ever seeing Geoff anywhere near a record, I think its a fair fight.
